Chronic Conditions

Chronic conditions require monitoring, particularly if a pet is taking medication to alleviate the associated symptoms.

A house call veterinarian can perform an exam and testing to diagnose some of these conditions, determine the appropriate medications, and help monitor progress. Sometimes, however, more advanced testing such as ultrasound or x-rays or even surgery which would require a visit to a clinic and possibly a internal medicine specialist or surgeon.

Chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, hyper- and hypothyroidism, Cushing's and Addison's all require regular exams and lab work to ensure the dose of medication is correct and that it is working correctly.

How often a pet will require testing and examination will depend on the type of disease, concurrent illness, response to medication, and the individual. Once a diagnosis is made, a plan will be drawn up to determine the costs and frequency of testing.
